Styl-Plus and their Trailblazing Hitz

The wake of early 2000s ushered in lots and lots of fresh talents and voices in the rapidly growing Nigerian music industry. There was the AJ (Ajegunle) squad including Danfo Drivers, Daddy Showkey (the foremost of them), African China, Baba Fryo and Marvellous Benji; the reggae squad including Blakky, then the hip-hop squad including Zakky Azzay, Plantashun Boys, Tony Tetuila, Black Trybe, The Remedies, Oshadipe Twins, etc. and the "old" but relevant like Oritz Wiliki, Raskimono, Charly Boy, Shina Peters, Dele Taiwo, and many more.

Styl-Plus was a part of the hip-hop squad. While their formative year was way back in 1997 during their uni days, they "broke big" into limelight in 2003 when their first two singles were released to radio stations. It was standard practice then. And before we blinked, their sound became dominant on airwaves.Their niche was love and every single song they dropped killed it big.

When we thought "Olufunmi" wasn't loosing its steam yet, they dropped another, "Run Away". Oh goodness, those sounds were mad. And for another two years, 2004-2006, no other love songs could compete aura for aura with these. Then "Imagine That", then "Call My Name" all of which made up their much awaited first album, "Expressions", launched both in Abuja and Lagos in 2006. Between then and 2010, they headlined major events and were very sought after.

In the next few years, the world moved past them and many more new voices emerged, taking their spot as it were. After a while, they released "Alive", "Iya Basira" and "Four Years" to tell the world they were still together as a group, doing great. Surprisingly in 2012, Tunde the guy in the group, opted out to pursue a solo career. In 2016, Eskimo Records signed the remaining members, Zeal and Shiffi. In 2022, Johnny Drille featured them on his "Odo" song. While we can't affirm if they are still signed to Eskimo or not, they have remained active and their involvement in other endeavours have not impaired in anyway.
