Friday Feels: Top 5 Movies to See this Weekend

Nollywood is a big industry. Weekly, movies are released in their numbers, the very reason it is one of the biggest movie industries on the planet. While some aren't destined for the cinemas, they dominate the internet on different streaming platforms. That notwithstanding, I have a handful of Nollywood's standouts you may want to consider this weekend.
1. "Saving Onome": The first on my list is this one. Besides, who says one shouldn't see an old movie that continually resonates with our everyday lives? Well this 2024 movie is cementer of the proverbial "some have food but cannot eat, some can eat but have no food" song. While the events aren't food related, we see a correlation between Tola and Jite, the young parents of Onome in dire need of #10 million for their love child's heart transplant and the refusal of Azuka's with overflowing cash stored in a cash room to help. Something you might call "proceeds" from laundering money for a local government chairman that has just been arrested. Trust me, their eventual resolve will shock you.
2. "Love in Every Word": Since it's release on YouTube in February 2025, the internet hasn't stopped buzzing. While it isn't an unusual romantic story, the "new" path it creates or chooses to tell it by presenting a man of Igbo stock as a simp is really amazing. And so far, the movie has popularised two lingoes: "odogwu" and "paranran".
3. "Reel Love": This Timini Egbuson's movie found its way into the cinemas in February 2025 and has done so well over the weeks. Like the title, it's a contrastive narrative of reality and the social media buzz surrounding the larger than life image of an influencer---Timide Sage. Additionally, the fake romance following a desperate attempt to redeem his image explains the swirling depths of social media culture of scrutiny and validation.
4. "Oloture": First released in 2020 with a sequel in 2024, this web series delves into the underworld where human trafficking thrives and the extreme measures the people in there take to keep their activities secret. To unravel these mysteries, Ehi, a young journalist goes undercover. Regardless of characteristic flaws trailing the sequel, it's still an interesting choice.
5. "Breaking the Rule": This is another of Omoni Oboli's work. The movie isn't a shift from the norm, it's a repeat with a twist. The first twist is the unambitious nature of a guy born into wealth and the ambitious nature of the woman he is betrothed to even though she was also born into wealth. The second twist is the unexpected romance between the woman and a much younger guy: broke but ambitious. Funny, right?
Though this recommendation isn't a get-your-money-back kind of, it's sure a good guide to pick something nice for your relaxation this weekend. Have fun!
