Tiwa Savage's ''Somebody's Son'', the Price Many can't Pay
Do you know that songs transcend beyond mere rhythms? Rhythms are only vehicles by which the lyrics of songs are transported into the recesses of the soul. Needless to explain why you react in the exact way a song wants you to.
Tiwa Savage's ''Somebody's Son'' is an oxymoronic expression of despair and hope. It tells the story of a young woman who is tired of loving the wrong ones and while in this lamentation state, she considers the pain of heartbreaks, her doubts about trying again and blurts out ''Okan mi le ko ko'' (I can't give up just like that, I'm hell bent on trying again). But then, she asks a rhetorical question, ''Se won bi soni me ran ni ( Must I always make wrong choices?), I'm tired of getting it wrong (I just hope) this (decision to try again) won't be another heartbreak song. By the way, the original expression is "Se won bi sorin meja ni?" Not " soni / eran" like Tiwa said. Yoruba don suffer!
Now here is the real deal:
Somebody’s son go find me one day
One day
I don dey wait don’t stay too far away...
I am so sure Tiwa herself doesn't understand the weightiness of these lines. As rhythmic as they sound, do you know how much work people put into waiting? Do you know how much price they pay to wait? Do you think waiting in the real sense is easy? If you're waiting for the right wife or husband, do you go sleeping around; living as carefree as you want? What prayers do you pray? In your decision making or in knowing which man or woman to be with, do you rely only on your own head knowledge and experience? Like Tiwa, you will burn out if you keep making choices based on superficial features like cute, caring and all whatnot and your heart will never heal. It will always be a roller coaster of wrong decisions, pain and regret.
Sometimes, the "big" things are in people or places one never thought to look. Calm down and let God! Let your actions align with your thoughts. Somebody's son go find you if you really wait. Enjoy the lyrics.
Sorry, I’m not sorry

But now my heart e still dey pain me
[Pre-Chorus]
Okun mi le, O le ko ko
