Queer Author, Romeo Oriogun Wins the Big Prize of $100,000 at NLNG Prize for Literature

 

Romeo Oriogun's poetry collection Nomad has won the big prize of $100,000 at this year's edition of NLNG or Nigeria prize for literature (one of the world's richest prizes held on Friday the 14th of October, 2022 at The Convention Centre in Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. According to the judges, his collection aligns with the themes of grief, exile, memories and displacement expressed in fresh language. 

The queer poet and author emerged top on the list from the caucus of Su'ddie Vershima Agema (author of Memory and the Call of Water), and Saddiq Dzukogi (author of Your Crib, My Qibla). While being thankful on social media, Oriogun extended his humaneness in the spirit of sportsmanship, announcing he would let go of ten percent of his cash prize to Su'ddie and Saddiq. A show of love we hope other winners (of subsequent editions) would emulate like he did those of NoViolet Bulowayo, Yewande Omotosho and Namwali Serpell.
